64-Bit (x64) Support

DataVoila News Comments Off

Today I received an email asking whether DataVoila is also available in a 64-bit version. My reply may be of interest to others, too:

DataVoila automatically runs as a 64-bit application on x64 systems and as a 32-bit application on x86 machines.

Technically this is possible because we didn’t compile DataVoila for a specific architecture, but used the “Platform Target: Any CPU” compiler option. This causes the .NET CLR (Common Language Runtime) to load the application as whatever the default target is for the system upon which it is being executed.

With the following code snippet, you can easily check if DataVoila is running your script as a 32- or 64-bit process:

int bitsPerWord = IntPtr.Size * 8;
Output.Text = String.Format("DataVoila executes your code in {0}-bit mode.",

Second Beta Release

DataVoila News Comments Off

Today we released the second official beta version (v0.9.1) of DataVoila. If everything goes as planned, this will be the last beta version before the DataVoila 1.0 release.

The most important changes in this release are a new input/output type called “Nothing” and a widely improved plain text editor.

  • The content type “Nothing” can be selected to hide the input or output editor. This is useful if your script doesn’t require any input/output, and you want to save some screen real estate.
  • DataVoila’s plain text editor is now able to handle larger files. Opening a 100 mb text file should no longer be a problem (if enough memory is available).

A detailed list of changes is included as part of DataVoila’s help file and is available here.

The next version of DataVoila will have a brand-new application icon:

DataVoila Application Icon

The icon was designed by IconDrawer. It replaces the “star” icon that we used as a placeholder in previous releases.

DataVoila Approaching

DataVoila News Comments Off

It has been a while since the last post, but I haven’t been idle. Last Thursday, I completed the first release candidate of DataVoila, which is currently being tested internally. After passing this stage, I will have the program checked by a professional software testing company before it enters the public beta phase.

This means that the first official release of DataVoila is only few weeks away! Stay tuned!
